Designer table lamp The Globe made of glass
The Globe designer table lamp from 1964 You wouldn’t know that the Globe table lamp, by traditional Italian company Oluce, was created in the 1960s by looking at it. It looks so modern and unusual that it could easily be seen as a contemporary design. The Globe was designed by Joe Colombo – one of the most talented Italian designers from the 1960s – in 1964. His vision was always forward-looking. He focused on what might have been important to us in the future; on how our world could look. He was always thinking about science fiction and utopias when he created his objects. This is probably why his designs, such as this table lamp, still appear so modern to us today. The spherical, transparent glass used in The Globe is hand-blown and affixed to a metal structure with a satin nickel finish; depending on the way the light falls, it almost looks like anthracite.
