A physical masterpiece - designer hanging light 24 Karat Blau Ingo Maurer’s hanging light 24 Karat Blau emits a mysterious light which captivates people. It shines with a light which is golden - and yet blue at the same time. How can that be? With 24 Karat Blau, Ingo Maurer has managed to create a master piece which turns the physical laws of light refraction to account, in order to create a fascinating lighting effect. Four panels of acrylic glass - all made by hand - arranged in a square form the lampshade of the hanging light. Real gold leaf, which has been beaten wafer-thin, has been inserted into the acrylic panels. The gold leaf is 1/10,000 mm thin, which corresponds to 1,000 atomic layers. This is where physics comes into play. The light produced inside the hanging light shines out between the molecules as a short-wave blue light, whilst yellow gold light is reflected inwards. This creates the unique combination of blue light outwards and golden light towards the centre of the light. The external shape of the light can be changed as you wish, as each acrylic panel features four holes which can be used to attach it to the crossed rods which form the centre of the light. This means that either perfect symmetry or deliberate asymmetry can be expressed with 24 Karat Blau by either arranging the panels at right angles to one another or completely at random.
